The majority of business transactions today are conducted online, which in turn has caused computers to become household necessities. But as the internet continues to flourish, the rise of internet crimes seems endless. With the emergence of computer malware such as viruses, worms, spyware/adware we are constantly placing ourselves at risk by simply turning our computers on. The problem has become so widespread that Congress prepared changes in amendments specifically related to internet crimes. In 2003 the National Cyber Security Alliance reported that 90% of all broadband users have spyware installed on their computers! Corporations and small business owners worldwide are hiring software engineers or utilizing their own IT specialists in order to maintain appropriate internet security for their business.

Spyware/Adware is the latest form of internet intrusion, being any software installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent which allows information about you and/or your computer to be seen and used by others in an unwelcome manner. Being very difficult to remove on your own it usually requires installation of anti-spyware software to erase it completely from your hard drive. A lot of people think that their anti-virus software will protect against spyware as well, this is not the case since this software is not designed to specifically remove spyware, it goes undetected when your hard drive is scanned. Whether you’re a small business owner or even if you just use your computer on a regular basis, if don’t have some type of antivirus and anti-spyware protection installed on your computer you are extremely visible on the web (you want to be “invisible” when browsing the web) and are placing yourself at risk to intrusion and/or theft by internet predators. I would know since I had to pay $225 just to have viruses removed from my computer’s hard drive-which is never any fun by the way. So as a word of caution, make sure your information will be safe before placing it on your PC. Those of us that are middle age have a much harder time adjusting to all the new electronic equipment that is available. On a consistent basis I am having my children show me how to work some gadget or another. My husband is even worse. He insists that he needs and wants a cell phone, however he is constantly forgetting it at home and leaving it places. We have had to stop service on two phones so that someone else would not find it and start racking up a huge bill.

For father’s day our children were asking me what to get him as a gift. I told them that if they could find some type of cell phone case that he could keep track of it would be a great gift. They were concerned that if he had the cell phone in a case he would not be able to get to calls in time. I told them that at this point when he was losing the phone and leaving it behind at home he was not getting calls anyway. They agreed that I had a point and they said that they would look for some kind of device or cell phone case that would help him out.

On fathers day we met at one of my husband’s favorite spots for Sunday brunch. The cafe sits on a cliff over looking a huge lake. The cafe is at the edge of a state forest so there are not any buildings that can be seen in the view. Our children have enjoyed coming here their entire lives so it is always the place we pick for a special family gathering. The brunch was wonderful as always. When we brought out the father day presents my husband was excited. He is still like a kid when it comes to getting gifts. When he opened the package from the children he pulled out a cell phone case and also a cord that had clips on either end. The cords clip to the cell phone case as well as to your pant loop so that the phone is attached to you. He thought this was quite clever. He has been able to keep better track of his phone since father’s day. There are still times when I call him and I hear his phone ringing on his dresser in the bedroom, but for the most part he has it with him. He is now trying to figure out how to retrieve his voice mails. The kids are considering cell phone lessons for him for Christmas!

I only have one passion in this world, and that’s to travel to as many foreign countries as possible in order to soak up the sights and experiences that I simply can’t get here at home. Fortunately, I am self-employed and make enough money to indulge my wanderlust whenever the urge strikes me. Because I spend so much time in other countries, I recently purchased an electronic language translator to help make communication during my travels a bit easier.

Electronic language translators are basically portable dictionaries that can change English words or phrases into any one of a number of different languages. As you might imagine, electronic language translators are much more convenient than traditional dictionaries both because of their size and their ease of use. Instead of purchasing and lugging around several different dictionaries for a journey across Europe, for example, all I have to do is use a single electronic language translator to help me communicate in German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and more. And instead of standing there trying frantically to locate words in a paper dictionary, all I have to do is type in my entry on the QWERTY keyboard and the relevant translation appears in a fraction of a second.

When I first started shopping for electronic language translators, I wasn’t at all prepared for what I found. There were so many different electronic language translators available that I really had no idea which one would be best for my particular travel needs. Some of the products I saw were very basic and didn’t do anything other than render translations, while some of the products were quite complex and contained far more features than I would ever have to use. Then there were electronic language translators that even gave sample responses that I might hear in reply to a particular phrase. It soon became obvious that I would have to do a lot more research before making a final decision as to which electronic language translator to buy.

Once I figured out exactly what I wanted from my electronic language translator, I was finally ready to buy one. I had seen these devices in a few travel shops at the mall, but they were very expensive. I was pretty sure that I could get a better deal online, so I ran a couple of quick searches to see what I could come up with. As I had hoped, I found numerous websites offering electronic language translators for much less than what I would have paid in a store. I ordered the one I had pre-selected, and have been using it ever since.

My new electronic language translator has definitely made it easier to communicate with other people when I travel. This is one of the handiest devices I’ve ever bought, and I’m sure I’ll get my money’s worth several times over during the life of the product!
